THE ARTIST LARRY NIELSON
As Joshua Kors, reporter for The Nation magazine has said, “The creatures of Larry Nielson, unlike their brethren in a museum, are neither shot nor stuffed, but painted on pine slabs with a fine bristled brush.” And his western heros ride straight out of the wood to capture the viewer’s eyes.
The artist is widely acknowledged as one of Utah’s best wildlife painters. His feel for the wood tells him what is inside and his use of weathered barn-wood as his canvas is an inspired choice.
His formal educaton and training came from Utah’s Brigham Young University. His paintings and graphics have been acquired by President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Johnny Cash, Danny Kaye, Liza Minelli, James Brolin, Bob Eubanks, Jack Haley Jr., Carol Burnett, Red Norvo, Robert Hagel (President of Warner Brothers), Janice Joplin, Andy Williams, members of the singing Osmond Family, Loretta Young, Loraine Day, David Cassidy and The Lennon Sisters, to mention a few.
Larry has said that “painting on pine is like dancing with a partner where you feel there’s a bond between you and the wood, which has a lot of different hues, different configurations, even rusty nails and knot holes. They add to the spirit I’m trying to express.”
